The Desk Reset Guide

Last updated: October 19, 2026

A short reset gives everyday items a route back to their place. Adapt these steps to your own desk rather than treating them as a rigid system.

Gather what moved

Bring loose pens, notes and accessories together. Separate things that belong on the desk from things that belong elsewhere.

Give papers a next step

Sort papers into incoming, in progress and ready to file. Keep the active task accessible, and remove completed documents when practical.

Return the small things

Use one caddy for frequent writing tools and a shallow catchall for the accessories you want to see. Avoid using every container as a miscellaneous overflow pile.

Check the working surface

Leave space for the next task and make sure cables are clear of moving furniture or ventilation. A useful reset can be simple and flexible.

Adjust the arrangement

If an object is repeatedly left in the same place, consider moving its storage closer. See How to Choose for a practical starting point.
